There’s been a facelift to the front end of the 2017 Toyota Highlander and it doesn’t look too happy about it due to its permanent scowl, but boy do we think this menacing new look rocks. It’s not all about brute force and brawn, either, for this family friendly crossover utility vehicle is one functional ride.

An extensive new line-up comprises the LE, LE Plus, XLE, Limited, and Limited Platinum models, while those after something a little sportier can opt for the SE which comes equipped with treats such as gorgeous 19-inch alloys and sport-tuned suspension. There’s also been a big push with with the Highlander Hybrid, available in LE, XLE, Limited and Limited Platinum trims.

The all-new gaping grille—depending on your choice of grade—comes with chrome or silver finishes, behind which, for the majority of the range, sits a reinvigorated direct-injected 3.5-liter V6 engine good for a stampeding 295-hp. Improved power and performance comes hand in hand with improved efficiency, with 21mpg in the city and 27 stretching its legs out on the highway. Expect 20/24mpg from the LE vehicle, with its 2.7-liter 4-cylinder generating 185-hp. The LE is also front-wheel drive only. You’ll get around 30/28mpg from the hybrid, paired with the bigger engine, and an impressive 306 total system horsepower which you really notice with the pedal to the metal off the spot. The range handles exceptionally well, period—not just for the vehicles’ size.

A couple of layouts are available in the cab, the most common being the second-row bench seat which leaves room for eight grown-ups, while those opting for the pricier models will be rewarded with second row captain’s seats which, however, means room for one less. Standard features such as five USB ports, an Entune stereo system with a 6.1-inch touchscreen and Bluetooth capabilities for calls and streaming are complemented by further goodies further up the range like ventilated and heated front and second row seats, a heated steering wheel, a 12-speaker JBL audio system, and, our personal favorite, an ethereal panoramic sunroof.

The range is among the sturdiest, safest out there, thanks to stand equipment like Pre-Collision System warning complete with automatic emergency brake, Lane Departure Alert, Dynamic Cruise Control and Automatic High Beams. These are backed by available peace of mind perks—some standard on the pricier models—like a blind spot monitoring system and Bird’s Eye View Perimeter Scan for a 360-degree view.
