HEAD’s BOOM RAW Launches on Earth Day, Built with Bio-Circular Carbon Fiber from Toray

HEAD marked Earth Day with a release that keeps performance on point while dialing back the environmental cost. The BOOM RAW is their latest tennis racquet, created using bio-circular carbon fiber developed by Toray. It’s part of a shift toward smarter material choices in serious gear.

Toray’s carbon fiber is made from biological waste. That includes byproducts from agriculture and forestry that are usually discarded. Instead of sending it to landfill, the waste is processed into high-performance fiber. The result is a racquet that matches the specs of HEAD’s in-line BOOM series without relying on virgin carbon sources.
This isn’t a one-off gimmick. HEAD and Toray started working on the tech in 2024, experimenting with prototypes before the BOOM RAW even had a name. The two companies are locked in for the long run. HEAD wants this type of build to be the baseline, not a limited edition stunt.

For players like me who train daily and compete often, gear needs to hold up under pressure. The BOOM RAW is built on the same platform as the in-line BOOM, so it’s expected to bring that mix of controlled power and fast handling. Whether it actually delivers that kind of feel on court is something I’m looking forward to finding out.
Its stripped-down aesthetic is intentional. The matte black finish, understated teal accents, and the faint world map across the strings all work together without shouting for attention. It looks ready to play, not pose. No gloss. No gimmicks. It feels like a racquet made for someone who actually hits five days a week and doesn’t need their equipment to double as a social media prop.

There’s more to the story. HEAD’s main production facility in China is switching to green energy. That move alone is expected to cut about 7,000 tons of carbon emissions each year. Combine that with a racquet built from recycled plant waste, and it starts to sound like HEAD is doing more than checking boxes. They’re changing the supply chain in real ways.
The BOOM RAW is still a limited drop for now, but it signals something bigger. HEAD is proving that sustainable materials don’t have to mean compromises in feel, weight, or control. And honestly, it’s refreshing to see a gear company follow through like that.
This racquet earns its place. It plays clean, looks sharp, and comes from a process that makes sense. If HEAD keeps this up, it won’t be the last time we see performance meet sustainability in a way that actually holds up on the court.
